Another piece for the L.A. Times Literary section. The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake is a novel by Aimee Bender about a girl who discovers that when she eats food she can taste the emotions of the person who made it. I had a lot of fun with this one – despite the melancholy mood of the piece, I definitely came away craving lemon cake…
This illustration for the L.A. Times accompanies a review of Jane Smiley’s new novel, Private Life. Spanning the 1880s to WW2, Private Life tells the story of one woman’s inner landscape as she struggles with a restrictive and abusive marriage and the changing tides of history.
I’ve got the audio book version out from the library and I’m looking forward to listening to it. Incidentally, if you’re an artist who works alone in a studio for most of your working hours, I’d say the greatest thing you can do for your sanity is to stock up on music, podcasts and audio books. For me it helps to keep all the parts of my brain turned on!
This was another L.A. Times book review illustration, for a book called The Sabbath World by Judith Shulevitz . The book is about the idea of a Day of Rest in both religious and secular traditions, so I wanted to convey a restful, contemplative mood. I imagined this woman in a blissful state of mind as she listens to the sound of the leaves.
